The Breast Imaging Fellowship at University of New Mexico Hospital offers a uniquely powerful training model: a small, close-knit program within the state’s primary tertiary referral and county hospital.

Based in Albuquerque, fellows care for patients referred from across New Mexico—while also playing an active role in educating the next generation of physicians.

2026-2027 Recruiting Cycle

In accordance with SCARD guidelines, all interviews will be virtual.

In-person "Second Look" is welcome after rank list is certifified. We will broadcast to all applicants at that time.

We will be recruiting for one fellowship position. Invitations to interview will be sent as early as November 1st, and interviews will be held from January 11th through March 31st.

Breast Imaging

Clinical & Teaching Experience

Fellows are immersed in all aspects of breast imaging while also engaging in structured and informal teaching:

Clinical Training

High-volume screening and diagnostic mammography
Breast ultrasound and MRI interpretation
Image-guided biopsies (stereotactic, ultrasound-guided, MRI-guided)
Preoperative localization techniques

Teaching & Leadership Development

Daily workstation teachingwith radiology residents, providing real-time guidance during case interpretation
Hands-on instruction during image-guided procedures
Active participation in multidisciplinary conferences and case discussions
Opportunities to deliver formal lectures and case-based sessions

As fellows gain experience, they take on increasing responsibility as educators and clinical leaders. In the latter part of the fellowship year, fellows may function in a supervisory role, guiding residents in both imaging interpretation and procedures under faculty oversight.

This progressive model ensures graduates are not only clinically confident, but also well-prepared to teach, lead, and mentor in future practice settings.
