The mission of the UNM Radiology Residency Program is to train outstanding Diagnostic Radiology physicians capable of performing and interpreting the full spectrum of diagnostic radiology. Our department seeks to provide the highest quality healthcare to the entire population of New Mexico, including those with limited access to care, providing radiology imaging and services unavailable elsewhere in the state. Our goal is to train physicians for future practice in New Mexico, either at our own institution or in community practice. This mission aligns with the mission of UNM SOM, seeking to ensure access to care for everyone in our minority-majority state, regardless of economic or geographic circumstances. We additionally seek to train future educators in diagnostic radiology by providing opportunities to work with and help train diagnostic radiology residents, medical students, and radiology technology students. We strive to foster innovation, discovery and creativity; and translate research and discoveries into clinical or educational practice.
Program Aims
I'm Tim Naney, and I'm honored to be the Program Director for the University of New Mexico Diagnostic Radiology Program.I first came to UNM in 2016 for residency, including a year as Chief Resident, before heading to the University of Florida for Neuroradiology fellowship. I came back to UNM as faculty because this program gave me something I didn't find elsewhere: outstanding training, an unmatched case load as New Mexico's only Level 1 trauma center and academic safety-net hospital, and a patient population as diverse as the state itself — a real strength for building the kind of broad clinical judgment this specialty demands. I also love the faculty and resident culture we have which is built on real teamwork and mentorship. I love this job, this program, and these people — enough that I plan to be here through retirement.Having been on both sides — as a trainee and now as faculty — I know firsthand what makes this program work, and I'm committed to keeping it that way while continuing to innovate in how we teach, support, and prepare our residents for what's next. Add to that the food, the landscape, and the culture of New Mexico itself, and it's easy to see why this became home. I hope to meet you soon in Albuquerque.
