The Acute Care Surgery team at UNM Hospital consists of surgeons who specialize in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care. UNM Acute Care Surgeons provide comprehensive care of severely injured trauma patients and patients with surgical emergencies, including their evaluation in the emergency department, the operative management of acute surgical issues, and their subsequent supportive care in the intensive care unit. UNM Acute Care Surgery cares for a large, diverse population with complex and urgent surgical needs over a large geographic catchment area.
UNM Hospital is a Level 1 trauma center and tertiary surgical referral center serving injured and critically ill surgical patients for the state of New Mexico. As the only Level 1 trauma center for the state, UNM Hospital trauma center admits approximately 3000 trauma patients each year with a penetrating trauma rate of > 20% and a high volume of operative cases.

The mission of the University of New Mexico Acute Care Surgery Division is to provide outstanding emergency surgical and surgical critical care to all New Mexicans and to educate, pursue knowledge and advance the practice of Acute Care Surgery across the state.
