The mission of the PASE Initiative is to foster an awareness of the presence and complexity of ethical and professional issues in surgical care. PASE will help surgeons and all those providing surgical care recognize their responsibility and accountability to solve ethical conflicts through respectful professional behavior, leadership, and advocacy for their patients. PASE aims to enhance the ethical delivery of surgical care and promote education within and beyond UNM.
Aims and Objectives
Promotion of best practices and highest standards of professionalism and ethical care in surgery.
Fostering ethical leadership through giving voice to values.
Creation of educational opportunities to identify fundamental concepts and principles for the understanding of ethical issues in surgical care.
Development of skills in decision-making to make competent ethical decisions.
Development of advance interpersonal and communication skills for surgical practice.
Creation and implementation of educational programs from graduate medical education.
Building cross-divisional/inter-departmental support, resources and mentorship.
Development of research and /or scholarly projects in surgical ethics and professionalism.

Starting PASE Grand Rounds
Creation of longitudinal PASE case- based curriculum for residents.
Creation of clinical ethics curriculum for medical students surgery clerkship
Developing and maintaining a portal of topic-specific research and articles
(Informed consent, autonomy, Trauma ethics, error disclosure, end-of-life care, etc.).
Building a database of surgical ethics cases/consults for training and learning purposes.
