Why UNM: UNM has a great culture that makes it a wonderful place to train. This program is very supportive, from the residents, attendings, midlevels, OR and clinic staff. It is a very hands-on program that truly gets you started in the OR from day one where everyone involved is invested in your learning. Our patient population is very diverse, being the only Level I trauma center in the state, which makes for excellent clinical and operative experiences. This program has a great balance of education, clinical training, and lifestyle that’s owed much to the support we have from our faculty and the teamwork amongst the residents.

Why UNM: We have an amazingly supportive group of residents and attendings who push you to be the best plastic surgeon you can be. It is a very hands-on program with lots of early operative experience; I was plating facial fractures within hours of starting my first day. There is such a positive environment in this program, and I find myself laughing and having a great time with my co-residents on a daily basis. We have great working relationships with all of the hospital staff, and this makes for a very pleasant work atmosphere.

Why UNM: The supportive environment and exceptional mentorship I received as a medical student profoundly influenced my decision to pursue plastic surgery in the first place, and it's a privilege to learn and grow alongside the program and people that sparked my inspiration. As the state's biggest hospital and only Level 1 trauma center, we meet patients from all walks of life, from all over the state, and learn to support them through a broad array of medical conditions and needs. New Mexico is my home, and there is nowhere I would rather be than taking care of the community that I love so much.
