Our faculty offers a rigorous program for interested students around the globe. Our student program consists of clerkships that include rotations in drug and poison information, courses, and work-study positions when available. Our toxicologists also hold faculty positions at the UNM College of Pharmacy and the School of Medicine.
Clerkships
Clinical Toxicology
All UNM emergency medicine residents complete at least one four-week clinical toxicology clerkship at the New Mexico and Poison and Drug Information Center (NMPDIC). The rotation emphasizes the continuum of poisoning care including:
Fielding poison center calls
Shadowing bedside consults
Participating in poison center paper rounds
Participating in clinical toxicology review sessions
Participating in didactic/discussion sessions on all major poisoning topics
Since many of the UNM emergency medicine residents elect to practice in New Mexico hospitals, the NMPDIC clerkship serves as an important mechanism for establishing strong relationships with emergency physicians throughout the state.
