Regional Anesthesiology & Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship
Continue your medical education here at UNM as a fellow and visiting professor in our non-ACGME Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship. Work and learn over the course of 12 months as you train in all aspects of regional anesthesiology at a competitive salary that is upwards of $180,000+ for the academic year. Care for a variety of patients who are undergoing surgery with a focus on ambulatory anesthesia and perioperative pain management techniques.
As a fellow, you'll master:
Central neuraxial techniques
Continuous catheter techniques
Truncal blocks
Upper and lower extremity peripheral nerve blocks
Multimodal Analgesia
Management of acute perioperative pain and acute-on-chronic pain
You will also gain a thorough understanding of sonographic anatomy and use a variety of local anesthetics and adjuncts for peripheral nerve blocks under ultrasound guidance.
What to Expect at UNM
In addition to ambulatory surgery exposure, you will also spend several months leading the inpatient Acute Pain Service and performing regional techniques at UNM Hospital, Sandoval Regional Medical Center, and UNM Children's Hospital. You will actively participate in department educational activities relevant to your training including assistance with resident lectures, simulations, and grand rounds. This includes the division's annual Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia workshop, a national teaching conference for practicing anesthesiologists.
Under faculty supervision, you will assume graduated responsibility for instruction and supervision of medical students and junior residents assigned to the service.
In addition, you are encouraged to participate in clinical and/or basic science research relevant to the discipline of regional anesthesiology. We also offer several minor rotations in areas like chronic pain, OB, and pediatrics for fellows who might have special interest in the overlap between these subspecialities and regional anesthesiology. For fellows who may be interested, we offer internal moonlighting options at the attending level hourly rate to maintain general anesthetic skills and supplement income.
As a fellow at UNM, you will be working with a variety of attending physicians, anesthesia providers, residents and patients allowing for a diverse educational environment. We value diversity, equity and strive for an inclusive workplace for all department members and patients.
How to Apply
To make the recruitment process fair and equitable as possible, our program offers rolling standardized Zoom interviews throughout the year. After interviewing, we will notify applicants of acceptance within just a few days. We offer a total of 2-4 fellowship positions at UNM and we will proceed with interviews until those positions are filled. The typical start date for most new fellows is August 1st but our program is flexible and can accommodate July or September 1st start dates as well.
If you have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in anesthesiology and are interested in the regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine fellowship, please email your CV and 2 letters of recommendation to Dr. Andrea Sandoval, program director at asandoval@salud.unm.edu.
