University of New Mexico Pain Medicine Fellowship will prepare you for an interesting and exciting career in chronic pain medicine.
The University of New Mexico’s Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine has developed a world-class, ACGME accredited, one-year pain medicine fellowship training program. Being nestled in the largest and most populated city in the state and being the only ACGME accredited Pain Medicine Fellowship in New Mexico, procedural and surgical competency is easily achieved by the sheer volume of daily patient cases and exposure to up-to-date technologies and techniques.
Thriving partnerships with faculty from Anesthesiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Palliative Care, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation contribute to a well-rounded foundation upon graduation. The program boasts balanced clinical demands with ample board preparation resources that reliably yields acquisition of both Primary board and Pain Medicine board certifications.

The University of New Mexico Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine houses 6,000 square feet of Pain Laboratories focused on research of the physiologic mechanisms underlying chronic pain with the goal to elucidate non-opioid therapies for it. The vigorous clinical, procedural, and surgical volumes from both UNM and VA Hospital Pain Departments not only create multiple opportunities for Clinical research, but also fuels many of the ongoing clinical and laboratory investigations today. Our Pain Fellows have an opportunity to collaborate with research faculty in the pursuit of any Laboratory or Clinical research project of their interest that meet their available time schedules. By training in an environment where multiple medical disciplines collaborate to provide the best medical care possible for patients, our Pain Fellows learn wholesome approaches to complex pain conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This interdisciplinary pain medicine experience may include the following external rotations:
While priorities focus on best medical practices and passing exams, our program understands the importance of balancing business with time to unwind from the stresses of school and work. Pain Fellows learn quickly that faculty love combining educational endeavors over good food and that New Mexico’s diverse culinary selection does not disappoint. Once Pain Fellows learn how to answer New Mexico’s official question “Red or Green?”, then all the rest is smooth sailing with Southwest cuisines bursting with mouthwatering flavors.
With an average of 310 days of sunshine, there’s plenty of freedom to discover New Mexico’s diverse terrains, whether it be forested mountains, river valleys, desert dunes, or underground caves. Besides, every fellow knows that mountain peaks are the best place to do practice board questions, right? Over the years, some fellows have taken on new hobbies, like backpacking on the Sandia Mountain, snowboarding at Ski Santa Fe, or fly fishing on the San Juan River, while others indulged in the culture-rich atmosphere of each city’s Old Town where the sights and sounds of traditional Mexican folklore dancing or Pueblo ceremonial dances could be around any corner. There are unending discoveries for those with families, like the Albuquerque Zoo, the International Balloon Fiesta, or one of New Mexico’s fifteen National Parks. However, whenever, and wherever a fellow may need a little R&R, the Land of Enchantment can be expected to deliver every time all the time.
Following graduation, our fellows have gone on to practice in a variety of settings across the country. Please take a look at the illustration below, which shows the initial state our graduates begin their professional careers.
The UNMH Interventional Pain Fellowship… bring[s] to the table the training required to prepare a physician, through not only operative and image guided treatments, but also pharmacologic, and integrative care, to be at the forefront of providing the treatment and management for complex pain syndromes.
