Learn about where you will train when you come join our department. We serve on teams across the UNM health system. From outpatient settings to the main OR to the pediatrics OR.
University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is a 550+ bed hospital that is home to the only academic medical center in New Mexico, as well as being the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state. UNM Health provides the highest quality of care for more than 200,000 New Mexicans each year and performs over 22,000 surgical cases every year. UNMH is the primary teaching hospital for UNM School of Medicine, and will be the primary rotation site for the majority of the residency. Sub-specialty anesthesiology rotations such as Cardiovascular, Neurosurgical, Acute Pain, OB, Trauma Surgical ICU, and CTICU will all be housed at UNMH. The breadth of clinical exposure will prepare you for anything you will face after completion of training.
Pediatric Anesthesia provides the opportunity to care for all pediatric patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical procedures. In addition to a broad spectrum of surgical services, we routinely take care of patients from the newborn infant to the young adult patient, and all ages in between. We are a referral center for all parts of the state and the surrounding states of Texas, Arizona, and Colorado. There is opportunity for publication, for research, and for expanded clinical experience in our pediatric intensive care unit. We provide care for a state population brimming with diverse array of people from varied backgrounds. In New Mexico, you will have an opportunity to learn about ancient cultures, provide care for the youngest of patients, and provide medical care for those who are most in need.
Welcome to OSIS! OSIS stands for the Outpatient Surgery and Imaging services. At the outpatient surgery center we strive to give our residents and learners a similar experience to working at an outpatient private surgery center. Our quick pace, fast turnover center gives residents the opportunity to efficiently perfect their anesthesia skills. Residents learn outstanding pain control and nausea prophylaxis as well as monitored anesthesia care. At our surgery center many patients receive regional anesthesia as their primary anesthetics. Residents become very proficient at upper extremity blocks, lower extremity blocks and truncal blocks.
Welcome to the Chronic Pain Service and Pain Consultation & Treatment Center!
You can choose to do a chronic pain rotation starting your CA1 year. Then there is a required chronic pain rotation during your CA2 year. There is also the option of an additional rotation as a CA3. The chronic pain rotation offers our residents the opportunity to care for all pain patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical, fluoroscopic, and other minimally invasive procedures. The unique skills you learn while rotating with chronic pain will serve you for the rest of your medical career!
Our pain doctors are truly fortunate to work in a uniquely collegial interdisciplinary environment. The collaborative team includes regional anesthesiologists on APS, internists, and the primary care doctors in the outpatient Pain Consultation & Treatment Center (PCTC). As a chronic pain doctor you work with surgeons at UNMH in the main OR and at the outpatient surgical center OSIS, you perform fluoroscopic and ultrasound guided procedures in the fluoroscopy suite of Clinical Neurosciences Center, and provide consultative services to the inpatients at UNM Hospital and in the emergency room.
In addition to a broad spectrum of inpatient and outpatient services, we routinely take care of the most challenging pain patients with exciting comorbid conditions and psychosocial difficulties.
UNM is a tertiary care referral center for all parts of New Mexico and the surrounding states of Texas, Arizona, and Colorado. There is opportunity for publication and for research as our doctors closely cooperate with the department’s basic science laboratory where world class researchers are looking for cutting edge pain therapeutics and novel treatment targets at a molecular level.

The UNM Pre-Anesthesia Clinic (PAC) is dedicated to the assessment and optimization of patients in advance of surgery. The PAC provides tailored medical triage through nursing telephone assessment to identify patients with complex medical conditions who will benefit from further in-depth review. Advanced practice providers collaborate with faculty anesthesiologists to maximize the safety of surgery, streamline the day of surgery process and minimize unnecessary preoperative testing. The PAC takes a patient-centered approach to maximize patient comfort and convenience whenever possible, by performing required laboratory testing or electrocardiograms directly in the clinic room, and obtaining outside hospital test results to avoid duplication. A faculty anesthesiologist supervises interns and residents rotating through the PAC, and coordinates care between the surgeon, medical specialists and the operating room.
The Department of Anesthesiology provides a robust simulation experience for training its residents. Starting in the PGY-1 year, residents partake in an introductory Airway Workshop that emphasizes the basics of airway management.
Multiple types of simulation mannequins are utilized, and an instructor to learner ratio of 1:4 allows for focused education on correct technique and appropriate reasoning processes.
The protected environment of simulation is a fantastic place for residents to “learn by doing,” and to allow the scenario to create a degree of stress that is both conducive to learning and allows for significant reflection, self-improvement and self-actualization.
