Apply to be considered for the anesthesiology residency program.
We accept applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Our application requirements are the same as the standard ERAS application:
Applicants should have graduated within the last three years and should have at least two months of hands-on US clinical experience. Observerships do not qualify.
We require passage of USMLE Step 1 before the application is considered. Step 2 may be completed after the deadline, but is highly encouraged by application date. Successful completion of Step 1 and 2 is required prior to matriculation.
We screen international medical school graduates by the same criteria as US medical graduates. ECFMG certification must be obtained before the issuance of a training license.
To be eligible for training at UNM HSC, residents must be a US citizen, permanent US resident with valid work authorization or hold a J-1 visa. Our institution does not sponsor H-1 visas.
We typically offer six positions in the Categorical track and one position in the Advanced track. One position is offered for the Reserved For Physicians track.
The Anesthesiology Categorical track is a four-year program, which begins with the PGY-1 transitional internship year. The transitional year prepares residents for a career in anesthesiology by providing them with a broad knowledge base to serve as a foundation of practice.
The Anesthesiology Advanced track is a three-year program, which begins in PGY-2 with clinical anesthesia (CA-1) residency training. People who prefer a position in the Advanced track will do their clinical base year elsewhere. Please note: the clinical base year must meet the requirements of the ACGME and the American Board of Anesthesiologists.
The Reserved for Physicians track is a three-year program, which begins in PGY-2 with clinical anesthesia (CA-1) residency training. This track requires the applicant to have already completed a year of training in an ACGME residency prior to the start date.
On ERAS, you must apply to either the Categorical, Advanced, or Reserved track, or to multiple tracks. For our purposes, that is not a binding commitment. If you are invited to interview, you will find out more about each track.
