Molecular Genetics and Microbiology values mentoring of trainees, including post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.
Obtaining tenure-track jobs and funding is competitive. To assist trainees with career developement, the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology has developed a program to help talented postdoctoral fellows in the department through appointments to research faculty positions.
As a research faculty members, trainees receive mentorship to assist in building their publication, teaching and funding portfolio. Positions are filled through careful consideration of fellows’ scientific records, a public seminar and an interview with the chair and other faculty in the department.
Individuals appointed to this position will become fully functional faculty members of the department with appropriate faculty privileges and responsibilities.
Obtaining NIH funding is difficult and renewal of a first R01 is strong evidence that as a scientist, you are “built to last” and that you will have longevity in your career. MGM has developed a new program, called SPARC (Special Program for Renewal of R01 Committee) to help junior faculty build on their first successful funded grants.
MGM is committed to helping advance the careers of post-doctoral fellows. To assist in the career development of post-doctoral fellows interested in academic careers, MGM has initiated a program to provide targeted mentoring for promising post-docs. This program will tap faculty and educational resources at UNM to provide help with communication, writing, and other important skills. Post-docs who complete this program will be considered strong candidate for promotion to research faculty positions in the department.
