Recent Honors and Awards

  • MGM faculty David Peabody and Bryce Chackerian were named Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors.
  • Dr. Kiran Bhaskar's work to develop a vaccine for tauopathies, including Alzheimer's Disease, was published in npj Vaccines and featured by many media outlets, including Salon and CBS News. This work was partially funded by an intradepartmental pilot grant to Dr. Bhaskar and Dr. Bryce Chackerian from MGM.
  • Hear Dr. Kathryn Frietze's interviews on Arizona public radio and KKOB and watch her on KOB TV describing her efforts to develop opioid vaccines with the support of a $250,000 grant from the NIH.
  • Dr. Vojo Deretic was awarded a prestigious NIH MERIT award.
  • Associate Professor Dr. Judy Cannon was selected as a 2018 Women in STEM awardee. 
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Kathryn Frietze was named a KL2 scholar by the UNM CTSC.
  • Dr. Judy Cannon received the Outstanding Mentor award at the 2017 Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program research day.
  • Two MGM Professors, Dr. David Peabody and Dr. Bryce Chackerian, have been selected to receive the STC.UNM 2017 Innovation Fellow Award.


  • The National Institutes of Health awarded the UNM HSC a 5-year, $11 million grant to establish a center dedicated to the study of autophagy.  The AIM Center for Autophagy, Inflammation and Metabolism in Disease is funded as a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence and is led by MGM Chair Dr. Vojo Deretic.   • The National Institute on Aging awarded a new 5-year R01 award to Dr. Mary Ann Osley.
  • Dr. Michelle Ozbun was awarded a new 5-year R01 award from the National Cancer Institute to study the mechanisms of Human Papillomavirus infection. Read more about her efforts here and here.
