The MD/PhD Admissions Committee consists of faculty members from the graduate school and medical school. Based on the American Medical College Admissions Service (AMCAS) application, supplemental application, statement of purpose and letters of recommendation, the Admissions Committee selects applicants to interview. Interviews are conducted over a two day period between December and January. Three to four personal interviews are conducted by members of the MD/PhD admissions committee.
Successful applicants will have highly competitive academic records and scores on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and be able to document substantial interest in research. One MD/PhD applicant will be selected every year. Currently, students in the program are fully funded, meaning that they receive a merit-based scholarship consisting of tuition and fee expenses, a stipend and health insurance. Students in the program are expected to excel academically and play leadership roles in the School of Medicine. Take a look at the MD/PhD Handbook for more information.
All materials except the online application can be sent to the MD/PhD program by email to SOMREO@salud.unm.edu with MD/PhD Application in the Subject.
The UNM School of Medicine Admissions Policy also applies to the MD/PhD program. Briefly, an important non-performance factor in considering students for admission to The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is the residency status of the student. As a state-supported institution in a state where health care needs are great, the medical school feels strongly that most of the accepted applicants should be residents of New Mexico. The school acknowledges a secondary obligation to students in western states without medical school through participation in the Western Interstate Commission of Higher Education (WICHE*) program and will continue to accept a few of these students each year. The school accepts a few out-of-state residents with exceptional qualifications. Foreign nationals with U.S. permanent resident visas who otherwise meet the requirements for admission are also considered. Students must meet the minimum requirements for admission into the UNM School of Medicine. Applicants to the MD/PhD program can request that their applications be also considered for the MD program. Students currently in the first, second or third years of Medical School at UNM may also apply.
*The University of New Mexico is also a member of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Therefore, consideration is given to residents of participating states that at present have no medical schools (Montana and Wyoming).
The MD/PhD applicants will undergo a preliminary review by the MD/PhD Committee on Admissions, and select applicants will be invited to attend the MD/PhD interview session during the last week of January.
Space is limited; applying to the program early is strongly encouraged.
Only complete applications will be considered.
