The New Mexico Bioscience Authority (NMBSA) was created in 2017 by the legislature as an official state entity and the state’s first public-private partnership which includes state government, research institutions, national laboratories, and private industry. In addition, the NMBSA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation able to co-invest public funds in collaboration with private investment in New Mexico based bioscience companies per its initiating legislation. The NMBSA is growing a robust bioscience industry in New Mexico by connecting Research & Development, Tech Transfer, Investment, and Entrepreneurs.
The Board of Directors is comprised of 13 professionals from across the state that represent various research institutes, industries, and entrepreneurial organizations that comprise the bioscience sectors. More information regarding the five subsectors that contribute to the diversification of bioscience in New Mexico can be found here, The Future of Bioscience in New Mexico.
The NMBSA currently conducts three main programs to promote the advancement of the bioscience industry in the state: Community Readiness Program, Co-Investment Program, and the Bioscience Business Support Program, which has created the NM Rural Biotech Ecosystem and the NM Bioscience Connect Ecomap. The Connect Ecomap is a living catalogue of all the organizations, resources, career opportunities, events, and news relevant to the bioscience industry throughout the state.
The NMBSA is launching two internship programs. The first, Bioscience Entrepreneurial Experience (BEE), will pair a business student with a bioscience student and integrate them into a work experience in a local startup company. In addition to participating in the day-to-day experience of working in a bioscience company, the students will also participate in weekly workshops to learn what it takes to move a bioscience innovation to market. At the end of the internship experience, the cohort will celebrate their experiences with a capstone event where teams will pitch new ideas to potential investors. The second internship program will recruit students to work with universities to help researchers, students, and professors commercialize their bioscience related innovation. Interns will work within tech transfer offices and entrepreneurial support teams to help guide individuals to the appropriate state, federal, and local resources.
