We envision the University of New Mexico (UNM) as an internationally recognized leader in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI), fostering a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment that brings together researchers and learners across disciplines. This initiative will significantly expand UNM’s research capacity, accelerate scientific discovery, and advance biomedical innovation to improve health and healthcare through novel methodologies and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Mission
Our mission is to advance research and education in the quantitative and computational analysis of large-scale, diverse data. This initiative focuses on developing and applying innovative methods for biomedical and health data, while integrating resources and expertise across UNM campuses. We are committed to expanding training opportunities and fostering multidisciplinary research to build a robust, collaborative data science community at UNM.
Director: Christopher Amos, PhD
Dr. Amos received his Ph.D. from the LSU Medical Center in New Orleans in Biometry and Genetics and completed postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health. He established the first Department of Biomedical Data Science at Dartmouth in 2014. He led the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at the Baylor College of Medicine prior to coming to the University of New Mexico in 2024. He developed the Oncoarray consortium, which genotyped 500,000 people to identify risk factors for common cancers.
