Word of the Day is designed to raise awareness of the UNM and HSC values and their importance among ALL employees. Each day’s word is key to compliance efforts. The goal is to encourage thought and reflection on what the words mean to ALL staff and how they see the word acted on – or not—in their workplace. These words are meant to send a powerful message about Compliance throughout UNM and the HSC and underline the importance that is placed on ethical practices.

Monday 11/02 | Risk Prevention

Risk Prevention is the process of avoiding risk or reducing the probability and impact of risk. In the context of corporate and healthcare compliance, the risk is generally legal or regulatory in nature.

Today’s thoughts:

• What actions have you seen in your work area that demonstrates risk prevention?
• Are there times when “avoiding risk or reducing the probability and impact of risk” seems to conflict with other values?
• If so, how do you address the conflict in yourself or with other people?

Tuesday 11/03 | Fraud

Fraud is defined as the intentional deception or misrepresentation that the individual makes, knowing it to be false and that it could result in some unauthorized benefit to that individual or others.

Today’s thoughts:

• What actions have you seen in your work area or other areas of UNM or HSC that demonstrates fraud prevention?
• What are the consequences when people don’t share these ideas about fraud?
• Has fraud ever been a barrier to change in your experience at the UNM or HSC?

Wednesday 11/04 | Compliance Hotline

The Compliance Hotline, also known as EthicsPoint, is an anonymous reporting mechanism that facilitates reporting of possible illegal, unethical, or improper conduct when the normal channels of communication have proven ineffective, or are impractical under the circumstances.

Today’s thoughts:

• In your experience at the UNM or HSC, have you ever used the compliance hotline when you observed fraud, waste or abuse of institution assets?
• Do you think management should consider working jointly with employees to find ways to increase support and participation in the hotline program?

Tips:

The UNM Compliance Hotline is available 24/7. Reports can be made by telephone at 1-888-899-6092 or online at unm.ethicspoint.com. The hotline is managed by an outside vendor and reporters can remain anonymous

Transparency in a business or governance context, transparency is honesty and openness.

Today’s thoughts:

• What actions have you seen at UNM or HSC that demonstrate transparency?
• What are the consequences when people don’t agree with the idea of transparency?
• Has transparency ever been a barrier to change in your experience at UNM or HSC?

Accountability is a proactive approach and enables the institution to demonstrate how the requirements are met in order to enable an ongoing capacity to comply.
