The UNM Department of Dermatology is so grateful for the consistent support and sponsorship of you, our valued alumni, volunteers, community partners and friends. Let us know if you have questions about where your dollars go or want to allocate funds to special projects or particular programs. We would like to embark on many other initiatives and hope you'll consider giving.

With your donations, we have been able to:

Provide excellent residency mentorship and training, and our residency cohort continues to expand
Support research and educational endeavors of our faculty and trainees
Subsidize continuing medical education for our alumni, colleagues and community
Organize alumni and professional networking events

Because of our continued success over the last several years, we are now outgrowing our clinical, educational and administrative physical space, and our greatest need is your support for facility expansion over the next 3-5 years. Our vision is to develop and build a dedicated Dermatology center, specifically designed to allow us to provide the best patient experience, training resources, and research initiatives, all in one location.

As a source of pride, the Department of Dermatology has one of the highest rates of alumni/community donor participation of giving at UNM School of Medicine, which far exceeds national expectations.

The Dr. Ben Smith Fund for Residents supports the Department of Dermatology Residency Program, with a focus on cultivating academic research and scholarship presentations at the national level. This Fund supports the current needs of the residency program through immediate use.

Edgar Benton Smith, MD Quasi Endowment in Dermatology

This endowment provides financial support to trainees involved in academic research and presentations. We are honored to offer this tribute to E.B. Smith through an endowed fund and aim to increase it with your support. As an endowment, this fund supports the long-term sustainability of the residency program.

Dermatology Chair's Fund

This fund provides flexibility for the department chair to invest in small projects and to spend where the needs are greatest throughout the academic year. We welcome additional contributions to this fund, which was initiated by a generous, private donor in 2016.

Walter Burgdorf MD Memorial Lectureship Fund

This fund honors the contributions Dr. Burgdorf made to dermatology resident education at The University of New Mexico and acknowledges his outstanding service to the field as a diagnostician and author.

Initiated in 2014 by Dr. Burgdorf's former residents, the purpose of the fund is to support a visiting lecturer whose focus will be on clinical education in dermatopathology and medical dermatology for current residents. The selection process will be guided by faculty, and former and current residents.

Joel D. Nash MD Fund for Excellence in Scholarship

The Joel D. Nash, MD, Fund for Excellence in Scholarship is a permanently endowed fund. This fund preserves the memory of Nash's exceptional contributions to UNM by providing financial support for clinical or basic research (scholarship) efforts. As a permanent, endowed fund, the principal is held in perpetuity and only the investment income will be available annually for support of the Department of Dermatology.

Vascular Anomalies Clinic Team Fund

The Multidisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Clinic’s collaborative clinical team, the only such center in New Mexico, brings together providers from multiple medical and surgical services, all of whom specialize in vascular anomalies/birthmarks. We care for children and adults with vascular tumors (such as hemangiomas) and misdevelopments (such as venous, lymphatic or arteriovenous malformations).
This fund will support scholarly activity, community outreach events, education and research endeavors.

Ryan F. Daniell Memorial Fund

This fund was created to honor the legacy of Ryan F. Daniell, who left us too early because of melanoma. It was Ryan’s hope that his struggle with the disease would lead to increased awareness, early detection, and accessible treatment for all New Mexicans. His family established this fund in his name, and they welcome your partnership.
