Started in 2010 by Dr. Aimee Smidt, the UNM multidisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Clinic (VAC) team is the only such collaborative working group in New Mexico. We bring together experts in multiple medical and procedural services and specialize in vascular anomalies and birthmarks, such as hemangiomas and malformations.
Our work is focused on this unique patient population, providing the highest quality care, as well as teaching our trainees/colleagues and leading local research for these conditions. The team currently meets for a full day every other month and starts with a clinicopathological and radiologic discussion of each patient. Trainees from different representative areas are integral to these sessions, and their education on these topics truly sets us apart from other centers without such teams. In addition, there is ample opportunity for interdisciplinary research and scholarly opportunities in this population. Many team members are active members of the premiere organization dedicated to this work, the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA), are published, invited to give regional and national presentations, and have been publicly recognized for their contributions to the field.
Our team includes:
Thank you for the unbelievable care. Your skill and the whole team approach was so reassuring. You and your team are really something!
How lucky they (patients/families) are that you provide multidisciplinary visits and take so much care to have a whole body approach. They are getting so much more than the standard of care with your clinic.
