Internal Medicine Division of Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology encompasses the entire spectrum of care of patients with cardiovascular disease. Our faculty members not only assume responsibility for the care of the entire patient, but also focus on highly specialized areas of patient care. 
Our highly specialized areas of clinical and research expertise include: 

  • Invasive and Interventional Cardiology, including Structural Transcatheter Heart Procedures
  • Non-invasive Cardiovascular Imaging and Advanced imaging
  • Electrophysiology
  • Preventive Cardiology
  • Multidisciplinary specialties, such as:
  • Adult Congenital Heart Disease
  • Advanced Heart Failure program
  • Cardiac Rehab and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing
  • Heart disease and Secondary Pulmonary Hypertention
  • Cardiooncology and Myocardial Strain Imaging
  • Valvular Heart Disease 

Expert Training and Research in Cardiovascular Medicine 

In addition to the clinical mission of the division, our faculty members drive dedicated research within their sub-specialty areas. They are also continuously engaged in the education of students, house officers and each other. This academic medical approach is unique to the state of New Mexico. 

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program 

The UNM Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program (ACHDP) is listed in the Clinic Directory of the Adult Congenital Heart Association. Alex Schevchuck, MD, MS, FACC, is the Director of the Program. 
ACHDP uses an integrated model for the overall care (in-and out-patient) of adult survivors of congenital heart disease. Besides addressing the medical, electrophysiologic, surgical and non-surgical aspects of congenital heart disease in adults, the program includes dedicated personnel from radiology, primary care, pediatric cardiology, cardiac echolab and social services. We are also collaborating with Colorado Children’s Hospital to treat the most complex patients. 

Advanced Heart Failure Program

The Heart Failure Program provides high-level specialized care for all inpatients and outpatients with heart failure.  These patients can establish in our multidisciplinary clinic which specializes in comprehensive heart failure management.   This program has been awarded the Gold Plus Award for Excellence from the American Heart Association.  Mark E. Garcia, MD is the Interim Director of the Program. 

Cardiac Rehabilitation  

This program provides a supervised, monitored, and individualized exercise program for patient with a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases.  There is continued emphasis on education and development of home exercise programs.  Cardiac rehabilitation is also open on Saturdays to better accommodate patient’s schedules. 

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) 

CPET provides a comprehensive exercise evaluation for patients with heart failure or other cardiovascular conditions.
