The University of New Mexico (UNM) is one of 17 clinical sites in the IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network (ISPCTN). ISPCTN is one of the components of  Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program, a national seven-year research initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health. ECHO aims to determine what factors give children the highest probability of achieving the best health outcomes over their lifetimes. ECHO uses the existing cohorts totaling about 50,000 children from racially, socioeconomically and geographically diverse backgrounds in addition to the IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network for supporting intervention studies of promising approaches among rural and underserved children.

About the UNM Pediatric Clinical Trials Center

ISPCTN was created to study any disease or condition relevant to the pediatric population, although priority is given to the four focus areas of the ECHO Program.

ECHO research works with diverse populations of children across the country and focuses on:  

• Upper and lower airway health and development
• Obesity
• Pre-, peri-, and postnatal outcomes
• Development of cognition, emotion and behavior
• Child health

The 18 clinical sites that provide medically underserved and rural populations with access to state-of-the-art clinical trials, apply findings from relevant pediatric cohort studies to children in IDeA state locations, and build pediatric research capacity at a national level include:

Mentoring and Professional Development Program

This program supports professional development for faculty to conduct pediatric clinical trials by providing mentorship, infrastructure support, and an experienced team to assist with research coordination. Contact PIs for more information.
