The University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNM SOM) uses the centralized American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) that is supported by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The AMCAS application of those applicants who wish to apply to the UNM SOM will be electronically forwarded to our school. The AMCAS Application Fee is $175.00 for the first designated school and $45.00 for each additional school.

Please note that the AMCAS verification process can take anywhere from four to six weeks from the time that your application and all required official transcripts are received. Please review the AMCAS Instruction Manual for more information on the AMCAS application.
Applicants will be notified by email to complete the Secondary Application.
It is important for applicants to be aware that the AMCAS application does not allow updates to the clinical/volunteer/research experiences after submission. There are limited changes that can be made to the primary AMCAS application post submission. For a list of the approved post submission changes, please visit the following AAMC website: https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/amcas-postsubmission-actions/. If you are able to continue or begin a new experience after your application has been submitted, we recommend that you discuss it during your medical school interview.
The AAMC strongly believes that the various costs associated with applying to medical school should not be a barrier. They are especially committed in helping aspiring physicians navigate the process during these especially challenging times. The AAMC Fee Assistance Program assists those who, without financial assistance, would be unable to take the MCAT, apply to medical schools using AMCAS, and more.

If you have any additional questions, please email the Fee Assistance Program at fap@aamc.org.
All applicants who submit a Primary AMCAS application will be invited via email to complete the Secondary Application. Applicants will be allowed two weeks to complete the Secondary Application from the time they are initially invited. After the Office of Admissions receives your Secondary Application, staff will screen your application for New Mexico Residency Status, minimum MCAT and GPA scores and all the required prerequisites. Please note, applicants are not required to complete the Secondary Application if they feel they will not meet our minimum requirements.
Secondary Application Fee: $100.00 to be paid after applicants have been invited to complete the Secondary Application. The fee must be paid by credit card through the online Secondary Application.
Applicants who are invited to complete the Secondary Application will be asked to submit a recent photo of themselves. Photos do not have to be of professional quality, but should consist of a simple head shot against a solid background with only the applicant in the frame. Photos will not be included in your application during the review with the Committee on Admissions and are for office use only.
