Become a Pharmacist Clinician in New Mexico!

Thank you for your interest in obtaining Pharmacist Clinician (PhC) status in New Mexico. Please note that Pharmacist Clinician certification requires an active New Mexico pharmacist license.

In order to become licensed as a Pharmacist Clinician in the state of New Mexico, pharmacists must complete additional training. This includes:

• Successful completion of a 60hr, Board-approved Physical Assessment Course
• A direct patient care clerkship consisting of:
  • A minimum of 150 direct patient care contact hours
  • A minimum of 300 direct patient contacts, completed under the supervision of a physician or other practitioner with prescriptive authority.

UNM 60-Hour Physical Assessment Course

This course is a certificate based program that is accredited for 60 credit hours upon successful completion of course work. A certificate from the University of New Mexico as well as the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education will be issued upon successful completion of the summative Objective Structured Clinical Examination. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be to:

1. gather, document, and assess patient information
2. demonstrate appropriate physical assessment techniques
3. use these techniques to monitor a patient's response to drug therapy and for the presence or absence of adverse effects
4. document findings and plan recommendations for specific patients

Course Structure

• Lectures, hands‑on training and review
• Multiple Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), culminating in a Summative OSCE
• Completion of course earn 60 CPE credit hours. Awarding of the Physical Assessment Certificate requires passing the Summative OSCE

The University of New Mexico Continuing Education Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a Provider of Continuing Pharmacy Education. The Physical Assessment for the Pharmacist Clinician Certificate Program (Certificate Program Number: 0039-24-001-CP) consists of an ACPE-accredited knowledge based activity, which is assigned Universal Activity Number (UAN): 0039-0000-24-022-L04-P and a required summative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) UAN: 0039-0000-24-038-L04-P. Successful completion of the knowledge based activity provides a maximum of 60.0 contact hours (6.0 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit for Pharmacists. Partial credit will not be awarded. Credit is reported electronically to CPE Monitor upon completion of all CE requirements. Participants who complete the instructional activity and achieve a passing performance on the required summative OSCE are awarded the Physical Assessment for the Pharmacist Clinician Certificate.

All faculty and planners have disclosed all financial relationships with ineligible companies as defined by ACPE standards. Any relevant relationships will be mitigated and disclosed to learners prior to the start of the activity.

Pharmacist Clinician Certification

After completing the Physical Assessment Course, you are eligible to enroll in the UNM Pharmacist Clinician Training Program to complete the required clerkship hours for licensure in New Mexico.
