The President of the University has delegated responsibility for oversight of radiation sources at UNM to the Radiation Control Committee (RCC). The RCC ensures that all ionizing radiation sources, including radiation-producing machines and radioactive materials, are used safely on the UNM campus and affiliated locations that employ University faculty and staff.
The RCC establishes guidelines, rules, and regulations, based on US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Regulations, to meet this responsibility. The RCC shall also be responsible for meeting all requirements regarding radioactive materials licenses issued to any UNM entity or affiliate.
Responsibilities
Review and approve or disapprove special conditions, requirements and restrictions to minimize radiation hazards
Review and approve or disapprove of Authorized Users, Authorized Nuclear Pharmacists, the Radiation Safety Officer and Authorized Medical Physicists
Review and approve or disapprove proposals for the use of radiation sources
Review and approve or disapprove UNM’s procedures and radiation safety program changes
Review quarterly records of the radiation protection program indicating non-ALARA occurrences and all incidents and medical events.
Review the radiation protection program annual report.
Review radiation incidents and violations as well as proposed solutions.
Meetings
The RCC meets quarterly, more frequently if necessary. Meetings generally will be held the third Monday of March, June, September and December. For specific meeting dates and times, contact the Radiation Safety Office.
Membership
The membership of the RCC consists of no fewer than five permanent members who have knowledge in the field of radiation control and safety, or have some special interest that may enhance the committee membership. Appointments to the RCC are made by the Vice Chancellor for Research, with Committee recommendations, for a three-year term.
