The UNM fellowship in child abuse pediatrics is a 3-year ACGME accredited program that prepares fellows for clinical and academic careers focused on preventing and treating family violence, neglect and exploitation. Fellows are eligible to sit for ABP subspecialty certification at the completion of the program.

The University also affords multiple avenues for research across designated research centers, institutes, networks, and signature programs.
The fellowship program is located in beautiful Albuquerque, a mid-sized city that is renowned for it’s beautiful climate and proximity to breathtaking natural and historic sites.
The fellowship program includes 24 months of clinical rotations. All rotations but one take place in Albuquerque.
Fellows respond to requests for inpatient consultations on alternating weekends and holidays during daytime hours, and answer telephone calls every 4th night, with support from supervising child abuse pediatricians.
Fellows participate in several didactic education sessions during their training:
Fellows attend one national academic conference each year.
The fellowship includes 12 months of dedicated time for research, quality improvement, and education activities. Fellows receive training in clinical research and quality improvement project design, and one-on-one mentorship by an experienced mentor. Fellows are expected to produce at least one scholarly product by the end of the training period.

Fellow salaries are regionally competitive. The Section covers fellow expenses to attend one national conference each year (registration, travel and lodging).

In addition, fellows receive an annual professional development stipend that can be used at their discretion toward educational expenses including books and professional membership dues.
The program makes 1 new fellow position available each year. Eligible fellowship candidates are required to have completed 3 years of pediatric training in an accredited pediatric (or combined pediatric-medicine) residency program prior to beginning fellowship. Foreign medical school applicants with a J1 visa and US Pediatric residency training will be considered for the program. Our program participates in the National Residency Matching Program as well as the Electronic Residency Application Services application process. Candidates who are considered to be a good match for the program will be asked to set up a personal interview. The candidate's interview day will include meetings with the program director, faculty in the section, prospective research mentors and section fellows.
