Inpatient Pediatrics Training

During your pediatric residency at The University of New Mexico, you’ll work at UNM Children’s Hospital, the state’s only tertiary care facility solely for children. You’ll also provide subspecialty outreach care to all of New Mexico, sometimes with support from an air transport system.

General Pediatric Unit

Work with a multidisciplinary team that includes therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists, case managers, social workers and child life specialists. Full-time hospitalists and general pediatric faculty train you and supervise your care in the 34-bed unit.

Work directly with attending physicians in the 20-bed PICU while caring for children with conditions such as:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Hantavirus
  • Respiratory failure
  • Trauma

Use advanced infant and child simulators to learn procedures for critically ill children. Take house call along with board-certified pediatric critical care specialists.

In this 20-bed unit, you’ll care for children with malignancies and surgical diagnoses. Take part in outpatient hematology/oncology clinics and perform procedures in a safe, controlled environment. The multidisciplinary care team includes:

  • First-year residents
  • Second-year residents
  • Board-certified oncologists
  • Nutritionists
  • Pharmacists
  • Social workers

Help provide comprehensive care along with hospitalists, therapists and a board-certified pediatric physiatrist at the state’s only inpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility. With 15 beds, the unit serves children who have a variety of conditions, from traumatic injuries to congenital anomalies.
