Prior to joining the College of Nursing in 2020, Dr. Daykin worked in the Pediatric Emergency Department at UNM Hospital for over 20 years. During her over 30 years as a nurse she has had many interests and areas of practice, including SANE nursing, case management and emergency preparedness. Dr. Daykin has presented locally and nationally on a variety of subjects, including emergency preparedness, emergency pediatrics and rural pediatric care. Her Doctoral quality improvement project looked at increasing nursing confidence to care for pediatric patients in rural communities with the utilization of telehealth. Aside from teaching she also has a passion for pediatric patient safety. She has been a child passenger safety technician for 10 years and she continues to work with New Mexico EMSC Childready program providing education and support to nurses throughout the state to improve pediatric care.
Lecturer I
Ms. Guerra-Sandoval’s nursing career began at UNM Hospital. After completing a nurse residency, she became a staff nurse and then a Unit-Based Educator. Guerra-Sandoval teaches Level 1 nursing students at the College. She has received several honors, including the Distinguished Nurse and Daisy Team Awards. Ms. Guerra-Sandoval conducted a study in a medical-surgical unit to address language barriers of limited English proficient (LEP) patients. The study significantly improved the communication needs of the LEP patients and the findings have been shared at several nursing conferences. She has worked on several projects to promote safety and quality care at UNM Hospital. She is certified in the medical-surgical nursing specialty.
