Dr. Cogil's doctoral research and clinical practice have focused on the integration of oral health into primary care. In addition, she has incorporated oral health assessment and management into the advanced practice nursing curriculum at UNM. She has been involved in two HRSA grants to train students and providers in the assessment and management of oral health issues that can be managed in primary care. Along with an interprofessional team of dentists, medical doctors, physician assistants, nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners, she developed the Primary Care Oral Assessment Tool (PCOAT). She has presented her work on the PCOAT and integration of oral health at local, regional and national conferences.
Dr. Taylor has a broad interest in diabetes including how patients learn about this complex disease, diabetes care in rural/border states, and how the next generation of healthcare providers will learn how to provide culturally humble care. She has spent the bulk of her career as a nurse practitioner providing care to rural/under-served populations in Maryland and New Mexico. Additional areas of interest include how to best provide care to marginalized communities, particularly Blacks and other people of color, who often have the fewest resources, and to reduce disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes.
