Prior to joining UNM, Dr. Couig served as a Senior Nurse Executive in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Nursing Services. In her post at the VA, Couig advised the Chief Nurse Officer on public health emergency preparedness and registered nurse residency programs. Dr. Couig served as the national Program Manager for the RN Transition-to-Practice Residency Program and was responsible for developing infrastructure to support the implementation and continuity of this mandatory program for 141 VA Medical Centers. She served as the Chief Nurse Officer and Assistant Surgeon General for the U.S. Public Health Service from 2000-2005 at the rank of Rear Admiral.
Acting Associate Director, RN Transition to Practice Residency Program, Office of Nursing Services for the Veterans Health Administration
Prior to this role, Dr. Roth was the Chief of Education and Designated Learning Officer at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). She has championed many education initiatives as well as leading efforts at the SFVAHCS in achieving Pathway to Excellence® designation through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Dr. Roth earned a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing from Augustana College, a Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Grand Canyon University.
