Explore how the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy improves lives through innovation in clinical practice, advocacy and community research.
Clinical faculty in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administrative Sciences strengthen community health by:
Pharmacy practice faculty work with a broad range of providers to develop new models of care. You’ll see our faculty’s influence in areas such as telemedicine, HIV care (including PrEP), transgender medicine, hepatitis C treatment, pain management, cardiology, geriatrics, nephrology, pediatric pulmonary, and a variety of other medical specialties.
You can provide primary and specialty care as a pharmacist clinician in New Mexico because of first-in-the-nation legislation we supported. Today, nearly all our clinical faculty are credentialed and privileged pharmacist clinicians with broad prescriptive authority to manage acute and chronic medical conditions. Pharmacist clinicians are recognized as providers in New Mexico and as a result of passage of NM House Bill 42 in 2020, pharmacist clinicians have reimbursement parity to physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants when providing clinical services to patients with NM Medicaid or commercial insurance plans.
Faculty at the UNM College of Pharmacy have practiced in the patient-centered medical home model of care since it formed. In this model, each patient has an ongoing relationship with a clinician who coordinates care from a team, including a pharmacist. Patients learn how to manage their health, and they receive complete care that leads to better outcomes, higher satisfaction and lower costs.
