The Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship at The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center is the first and only fellowship of its kind available to qualified psychiatric residents in the state. It is a one-year program that trains fellows to act as expert psychiatric consultants in medical and surgical inpatient and outpatient settings.
Areas of expertise that fellows develop during their training include:
- Psychiatric manifestations and complications of medical disease
- Medical manifestations and complications of psychiatric disease
- The interrelationship of psychological processes and physiological processes.
In addition to the training they receive, successful graduates of the fellowship will find that opportunities abound for board-certified psychosomatic psychiatrists in the Southwest. The area is underserved and the psychiatric consultation service at The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) in 2015-2016 alone performed approximately 1700 new patient consultations. The UNM hospital system is the only academic medical center and Level 1 trauma center for New Mexico and is also a tertiary referral center for the greater Southwest region. For these reasons, fellows can expect to receive excellent preparation in treating highly complex medical and psychiatric patients.
