UNM Dermatology would like to express our gratitude to all who attended and supported this year's Walter Burgdorf MD Memorial Lectureship. It was an incredible success and we are honored to have such a strong community of learners and supporters. We are proud to host this event every autumn in memory of Dr. Walter Burgdorf, MD and his devotion to education.
Your continued support enables us to continue to lead inclusive education, research, and training in dermatology.
I can’t believe that it has been ten years since Dr. Burgdorf passed. What a good and lasting gesture that Brenda Dintiman got started with this Lectureship. I am so glad that I was able to contribute. My training at UNM has been life changing.
I have diagnosed over 300 melanomas, 30 cases of CTCL, 2 cases of pancreatic cancer, and 2 patients with breast cancer! Dr. Burgdorf’s legacy lives on in all of the residents that he mentored!
Bruce UNM “92”
Since its establishment in 2016 by former residents, the Walter Burgdorf MD Memorial Lectureship takes place every autumn; all faculty, trainees, community providers and alumni are invited to attend and CME credit is offered for continuous professional learning activities. The conference typically consists of didactics, case presentations given by Dermatology trainees, social networking events, and an invited speaker of national or international stature, especially selected for their work in legacy of Dr. Burgdorf's memory and interests.
Dr. Walter Burgdorf MD was hired as the first Chair of the newly formed UNM School of Medicine Department of Dermatology in 1984, with a joint appointment in the Department of Pathology, and served in this role until 1993. Previously, Dr. Burgdorf had been on faculty at the University of Oklahoma. His career included general and pediatric dermatology and pathological services, academic leadership, and medical writing, editing and translating. Dr. Burgdorf is vividly remembered for his passion for teaching and diagnostics, and we seek to honor this memory and let it guide our future as a Department.
