Train at a nationally recognized academic medical center in the heart of the sunny southwest. Apply to the Internal Medicine Residency.
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Department of Internal Medicine require all categorical internal medicine residents complete a scholarly activity project.
This requirement is intended to enhance the resident's understanding of a clinical area and/or research methodology including; design, implementation, interpretation, and presentation of results. The project can take place at any time during your residency in serial or sporadic research blocks or concurrently with regular clinical rotations. Up to three months may be granted for a well-designed project. Even while on a research block, residents are still responsible for their continuity clinic patient care.
All categorical residents will be required to present the results of their project as a poster, oral presentation, or manuscript. Presentations can be presented at local, regional, and annual meetings such as the American College of Physicians, Society of General Internal Medicine, Society of Hospital Medicine, Carmel Meeting, or other recognized meetings.
Each year a resident who has done an exceptional job in the field of research is awarded the "Excellence in Research Award" at the residency banquet.
Opportunities to pursue research your intern year allow preparation for applying for fellowship your second year. All categorical residents complete a Scholarly Project and many of our residents do several. For those who want to complete more in-depth projects, residents can complete up to three months of research electives.
