The Department of Pharmacy at The University of New Mexico (UNM) Hospital offers an ASHP accredited one-year PGY2 oncology pharmacy residency program. We are the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center in the state. Our Comprehensive Cancer Center averages over 100,000 clinic encounters per year.
The oncology pharmacy residency program prepares residents to become skilled and confident practitioners in their area of specialization. Residents will be responsible for ensuring optimal drug therapy outcomes as key members of interdisciplinary healthcare teams, while working to enhance the overall medication use process. Additionally, residents will engage in developing and supporting quality improvement initiatives, contribute to research, precept pharmacy learners, and give didactic lectures at the college of pharmacy.
Most rotations are 4 weeks in duration.

Our oncology residency program had our first resident in 2016.
The program at University of New Mexico is designed to accept one oncology resident each year. Though you will be the sole oncology pharmacy resident, you will have numerous co-residents. We have 7 PGY1 residents and 7 PGY2 residents including residents in ambulatory care, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious disease, informatics, pediatrics, and thrombosis & hemostasis.
In 2017, the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists granted our program full accreditation. In 2024, we were given reaccreditation.
Core rotations include the following outpatient rotations: hematology, stem cell transplant, breast cancer, gynecological cancers, gastrointestinal cancers/sarcoma/melanoma, thoracic oncology, genitourinary cancers, CNS & head and neck cancers, investigational drug services (2-week rotation), and advanced practice/capstone. Inpatient hematology oncology is also a required rotation. All rotations are 4 weeks in duration unless noted.
Many elective rotations are available, including inpatient pediatric oncology, survivorship, academia, informatics, thrombosis, and classical hematology. Other potential electives include inpatient antimicrobial stewardship or ambulatory pain clinic. Elective rotations can be developed and tailored to meet the goals and interests of each resident. The resident will choose one elective rotation which is typically 3-4 weeks in duration.
Residents have opportunities in a variety of required or elective clinics including Bone Marrow Transplant, Cellular Therapy Service, Head and Neck, Neuro-oncology, Gastrointestinal Cancer, Gynecologic Malignancies, Genitourinary Malignancies, Breast Cancer, Thoracic Malignancies, and Melanoma/Sarcoma.
Residents have many opportunities to teach through planned teaching experiences such as Case Presentations, Journal Club, and Oncology Didactic Lectures. Based upon requests from colleges of pharmacy, there may be opportunities to precept pharmacy students in the second half of the academic year. Additionally, when opportunities are available, residents may be able to participate in local, statewide, and/or national presentations.
In addition to clinical rotations and ambulatory clinics, oncology residents are required to discuss various oncology topics with their preceptors on a daily basis. Pharmacy operations are an integral part of the residency program as well but are limited to one weekend per month. Every year, residents are required to present one continuing education presentation. Finally, all residents complete a research project and final manuscript.
Yes, all residents must be qualified for licensure in New Mexico and must successfully obtain their license no later than 120 days after starting PGY2.
The resident has a shared office space over at the main hospital which is where all the residents’ offices are located. Each resident is provided a desk with a telephone and laptop. Residents can print documents from a shared printer. General office supplies are readily available.
Residents are expected to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting to support residency recruitment for the following year. Residents are also required to attend the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) Annual Meeting to present their research projects. Meeting attendance for both conferences is funded. Conference registration, airfare, and transportation to and from the airport is covered. A per diem is also provided for meals.
Residents are compensated with an annual salary of approximately $65,561, along with a comprehensive benefits package, medical/dental insurance, and 17 paid days off during the year.
