It was at The University of New Mexico (UNM) that I saw a tight-knit group of attendings and residents who had a strong passion for orthopaedics. Everyone was close and the residents were really good in the operating room. I was amazed by the diverse pathology that the remoteness of Albuquerque and the surrounding areas funnel to the only academic and level 1 trauma center in the state. UNM is a very balanced residency. We don't have to travel anywhere to complete any of our rotations. There is great exposure to each subspecialty. And while we work hard, there is a culture of camaraderie here that makes it enjoyable. Albuquerque is surrounded by a patient population with poor access to healthcare. Training here provides an opportunity to help people who are in real need while seeing some of the most diverse pathologies and complex trauma to be seen anywhere in the country. Outside of medicine, my hobbies and interest include hiking, fishing, working out, music, good food, spending time with my family. My wife and two kids have made Albuquerque home, and we have really flourished here. We can't imagine being anywhere else.
