I chose orthopedics because I don’t know if there are many fields of medicine or surgery where you can see such dramatic effects in patients after surgery. I love the fact that we can operate on people and help them walk again or return to play their sport again. I also love the structural/engineering type thinking that goes into surgery coupled with the art of surgery. It makes for some awesome surgeries.
When I rotated here, the first aspect of the program that stood out was the people. These were some of the most down to earth attendings and residents I had met and there was a comradery that I wanted to be a part of. I had such a great experience that I didn’t want to leave at the end of the rotation.
This program offers a well-balanced exposure to all fields of orthopedics while also providing many opportunities to learn and practice surgical skills. The attendings across the board are invested in providing us the tools to become well rounded surgeons. The attendings also provide us with the autonomy in the OR and clinic to feel confident going into great fellowships and beyond.
When I roatated her I remember hanging out in the trauma team room, going to fracture conference, getting involved in cases, thrashing it out on overnight call.
