I first learned about UNM Orthopaedics through an alum I rotated with who embodied the kind of surgeon I aspire to become. He spoke highly of UNM’s operative experience and culture: residents are given meaningful responsibility in the operating room early in training and benefit from exposure to diverse pathology as Albuquerque’s only Level I trauma center. Equally important, residents work hard yet maintain balance, supported by faculty who are approachable and invested in teaching rather than hierarchy.
As a husband and father of two daughters, I was also drawn to the family-friendly environment at UNM. During my interview, I noticed how many residents had families and how genuinely happy their significant others were living in Albuquerque. UNM even offered a Zoom call specifically for significant others—a small detail that spoke volumes about the program’s commitment to supporting not just residents, but their families too.
My experience so far has confirmed all of this: outstanding operative training, great people, and a supportive environment where both my family and I can thrive. I’m grateful to be here and excited for the years ahead.
