Memorable experiences during sub-internship at UNM: Socializing at weekly fracture conferences, beers and wings with the residents, and placing an external fixator in the OR and placing traction pins in the ED guided by residents and attendings
My first exposure to orthopaedics occurred when I sustained a labral tear while playing football in high school. From a young age, I knew I wanted to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Working with UNM Ortho solidified my career choice in orthopedics, as I realized I could help restore functionality and enhance the quality of life for patients.
When considering my residency training, I wanted a blue-collar program to ensure I became surgically competent. I also wanted a culture of camaraderie and a program where I felt comfortable being myself, knowing the program cares about my development as both a surgeon and an individual. UNM Ortho met all these criteria and had some of the best residents and attendings I have interacted with during my rotations and interviews.
UNM Ortho is unique because everyone works extremely hard but remains very humble about it. The atmosphere is relaxed and incredibly approachable. Even as a medical student on rotation, I often felt a part of the team as the residents and attendings actively sought to involve me as much as possible—something I didn’t experience in my other away rotations.
