UNM Ortho boasts a combination of strong operative experience, plenty of opportunities for research, genuinely wonderful people, and easy access to the outdoor activities I love. The department is so supportive of residents, and Dr. Silva and Dr. Treme truly care about our success. The department has a vibrant family feel, and I’m excited to come to work every day despite the long hours that any orthopedic residency will require.
Compared to what I experienced during other rotations and on the interview trail, residents and faculty at UNM seemed to have the best balance of hard work, early operative and consult experience, and good lives outside of work.
I had such a great month when I rotated here as a student. From getting to meaningfully participate in the OR to getting a personal tour of the facilities from an attending, the people at UNM made me feel like I belonged. Residents took the time to do things like walk me through an IM nail on my own with a precious cadaver, take me to lunch, and set me up to get facetime with the Chair and PD. I also had time to go to a wine festival, the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, and to hike in my free time, which gave me a taste of life outside the hospital.
