My rotation at UNM was the highlight of my fourth year of medical school. From residents actively involving me in orthopaedic consults to taking me mountain biking and grabbing beers afterwards, I was welcomed as part of the team both inside and outside the hospital. I also witnessed the same camaraderie and respect shared between residents and attendings.
The attendings are approachable, eager to teach, and push residents to strengthen their decision-making and operative skills. The residents look out for and support one another. As a sub-I, I remember helping a PGY-4 with a splint between cases so she could assist an intern who was swamped with consults. The program is filled with some of the most down-to-earth and genuine people I have met.
Outside of the hospital, Albuquerque offers an exceptional quality of life, with easy access to skiing, biking, and other outdoor recreation. I can bike from my apartment and be on the trails within minutes. I was confident in ranking UNM as my top choice, knowing I would receive outstanding training alongside a supportive and like-minded group of people.
