I chose UNM because I immediately felt comfortable around the faculty and residents at my interview. I did not complete a sub-I at UNM, so my interview was my first impression. I left my interview day feeling so happy that I could end up at an institution like UNM. There is truly a special feeling about this place that is hard to explain until you experience it.

My favorite thing about UNM ortho is the camaraderie of residents, the “blue collar” feel of the program, and the fact that our program director is a female, Dr. Silva. She is absolutely amazing and is a large reason I chose UNM ortho.

ABQ feels like a mix of home and the desert. I grew up in Idaho amongst the pine trees, and my medical training was in the desert. ABQ feels like a mix of both with the beautiful green, including pine, trees and the desert. New Mexico feels like one of the most unique states in America. The culture is so deeply rooted in every place you go and you can feel it. It makes you feel special to serve this community all the time.

My long-term goals involve doing a bit of general orthopaedics. So, I could see myself ending up in a more rural area to fill orthopaedic gaps in those areas that need it.
